    Principles of the team offense

Good team offense means good ball movement.  Good ball movement requires a quick decision making and a player movement without a ball.  Once they become a habit, players can start to read and react. And this is a principle of the basketball.

San Antonio Spurs Coach Popovich implements a very unique team offense called 0.5 rule and this is a really good way of practicing players to become good at quick decision making as well as improving the ball movement.  Here is the quote from Villanova Coach Jay Wright.

“One simple thing,” Wright said. “He has a ‘.5 rule.’ Hold the ball for .5 seconds; if you don’t shoot it, drive it, or pass it in .5 seconds, he’s on you. He wants that ball moving, and he wants people moving. And he really holds the guys accountable to that. I really that. It’s one of a number of things that we have implemented here in our program.”

Basics of the triple threats are "shoot", "dribble", and "pass".  Quick decision making on these actions are required in a very instant moment.  On the other hand, players without a ball would need to build a continuity in order for the ball to flow.  Restricting to ".5 second" stall in the flow is almost non stop.  It is difficult but it does seem to pay the price in a good way as Spurs have already proven their excellence in their team offense.

    1. Backdoor Cut
    2. V-Cut
    3. L-Cut
    4. Curl-Cut
    5. Flare-Cut
    6. Deep-Cut
    7. UCLA-Cut
    8. Front-Cut
    9. Shallow-Cut
    10. Flash-Cut
    11. Iverson-Cut

The following link gives the detailed explanation of the cuts and they are frequently used and seen on introductory to advanced levels of games.

The Iverson Cut is named after Allen Iverson and it is a cut where a player starts cutting from a baseline to the wing vertically, and usually receives a ball outside of the three point line.  It is amazing to see how this cut is named after a player which tells much of the influence to the game by the hall of fame.

How many more cuts are there?

Why pick and roll? Art of communication.

What are the benefits of playing pick and roll offense?  Why do we see quite frequently in professional and college games?  Why is it hard to defend?

I'm sure there are different answers but I believe the "Communication" is the biggest factor which makes P/R valuable.  It gives a situation of decision making on defense which requires group of players to communicate on how they defend.

Recent matches of Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs showed the advanced version of pick and roll situations and it is really fascinating to see the variations.   This is art of communication in sports.
